Francesc Palau 2019The Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu (IRSJD) addresses research from the standpoint of the human development life cycle, directing research activity towards biological and psychological problems related to pediatric diseases and adult health problems Which can originate and develop in childhood. This scientific and technological knowledge is the ideal platform to offer innovative clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive solutions to patients in their project of personal and social life.

The IRSJD aims to become a benchmark internationally in biomedical research in pediatric age, but also with an interest in global human development. Our general hypothesis is that events and interventions that occur at different stages of the individual's life, such as the fetus, newborn, childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood are the basis for adequate And healthy psychological, biological and social development. Early therapeutic interventions against interruptions or health problems in the pediatric age will have a positive impact on health or disease status in adults.

The IRSJD is made up of academic research groups from five entities. These institutions are two teaching hospitals, the Sant Joan de Déu Children's Hospital (HSJD) and the Sant Joan de Déu Sanitary Park (PSSJD), and three university research institutes, the Institute of Biomedicine (IBUB) and the Institute of Neurosciences (UBneuro ) Of the Universitat de Barcelona and the Center for Research in Biomedical Engineering (CREB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

For this reason, the IRSJD integrates both the scope of health care (HSJD and PSSJD) and biomedical science in an indivisible way by addressing the medical questions that arise from clinical practice with scientific approaches. We are looking for scientific answers to clinical questions by applying the basic principles of science and techniques of cell biology and genetics (IBUB), cognitive neuroscience and psychology (UBneuro), biomedical engineering and technology transfer (CREB) Of patients in adulthood (PSSJD) encompassing not only biomedical aspects, but also technological, epidemiological and health economics aspects.
